Autumn: The Perfect Time For Family Photos

The air is cooling off, the leaves are changing colors and everyone seems to be in just a little bit of a happier mood.  Yep, Autumn is here!  Ok, so maybe it's been here for a while for some of you.  Down here in Florida, it's finally starting to feel like fall.  

It's the perfect time to get that new photo of your growing family, just the two of you, or even if it's just you, just in time for the holidays!  The colors are perfect and warm; browns, golds, oranges, reds.  Wear complementing colors like a forest green, purples, browns, tans and of course the colors of the leaves!  Pull the vests and sweaters out of the closet.  Bust out the boots, you know, the tall leather ones, not the snow kind!   

We talked with Kristina from K. Hubbard Photography, she tells us, "when there's leaves on the ground, you can get natural photos of the kids playing in them, or babies discovering the leaves for possibly the first time."

Vendor Spotlight: Aubrey Lee's Bowtique

This week, we're featuring Kristina, owner of Aubrey Lee's Bowtique as our Vendor Spotlight. Kristina is a 33 year old beautiful Momma of one adorable 6 year old sassy little princess. She is married to her high school sweetheart and lives in Reno, NV with her family (almost 3 years now). We asked her to tell us a little about herself, here's what she had to say:

Kristina: I grew up in the bay area, but most recently lived in San Diego for 9 years while I was earning my Master's Degree in Psychology with an emphasis in child neuropsychology, specifically studying the effects of prenatal exposure to teratogens (things that are dangerous to a fetus if a pregnant woman consumes or is otherwise exposed to, such as alcohol, medications, illegal drugs, etc.). My mom's side of the family slowly started moving from California to Reno starting in 1993 when my Grandma won a jackpot in a casino here. We would probably still be in CA if my mom hadn't been in a bad accident 3 years ago, prompting me to quit working as a clinical trials coordinator and move 2 weeks later to care for her. She has had a tough road to recovery, but is now back to work (albeit not the same job as she had before as she can no longer perform those duties due to her injuries).

We said we'd go back to CA when she had recovered, but my daughter has since started school in Reno and I have established clients in my photography business that I started 2 years ago, so we're at odds about staying. Hm, we'll see what happens I guess!

Since I was so used to working full time in a fast paced environment, I had trouble adjusting to not "working" (even though caring for an injured adult who cannot walk is "work" in itself), so I started my photography business. It drives me crazy to not be busy doing something...anything. The money that I make after taxes, supplies, props that I buy from others for my photography projects, ext goes directly into a fund to help pay my mom's medical bills and a college fund for my daughter.


MWL: What made you decide to start making props?

Kristina: I started making hair bows for my daughter when she was a baby and I have tons of extra ribbon, so I started selling bows to get rid of it. I was very successful with Made to Match Gymboree bows especially. Eventually, I ventured into tutus, hot fix rhinestone embellishments on shirts, pillowcase dresses and more. A couple of years ago, I was building my photography portfolio and shooting for free. I didn't have a lot of extra money to spend on props and many of the props i came across while shopping were things I could make myself for much less, so I did. I already have many of the supplies needed to get started. My prop collection was growing, but I wasn't booking many babies to put the stuff on, so I decided to add some of those items to my shop and people immediately started swiping the items up. I don't make many bows etc anymore because I'm way too busy with the prop-making and my other love - photography.

MWL: What kind of props do you specialize in?

Kristina: My upcycled sets are my most popular items by far. They're unique and adorable on babies AND the added bonus i that I'm doing my part to save the environment by re-purposing old sweaters, jeans, shirts etc.


MWL: What inspires you when you're making your creations?

Kristina: Textures and colors. I am drawn to a sweater if it has a neat pattern in the knitting, if it's bumpy, super soft or a beautiful color.


MWL: Your craft area: OCD or organized chaos?

Kristina: A little bit of both. HAHA! It started out OCD, but I ran out of space to store supplies, so shelves and drawers have items together that I would prefer having separate. But it's not the end of the world I suppose. 

MWL: Tell us 3 things that would be in your dream craft room.

Kristina: A super fancy sewing machine/serger combo. A clone of myself so that we can create MORE items. And a massage chair so I can take a relaxing break when my neck starts aching from looking down for too long.

MWL: What is your favorite item you've made?

Kristina: I have lots of favorites, but the one that pops into my mind first is a little teal hat and pants set with suspenders and little shabby patches.


MWL: Are there any other crafts that you'd like to learn how to do?

Kristina: Eventually, I want to learn how to crochet. I'd also like to upgrade my cheap sewing machine to a nicer one and actually learn to sew more than just a fairly straight line.


MWL: Do you have a vendor crush? You can tell us!

Kristina: I have lots of vendor crushes! The "hookers" for sure. I've always been good at just being able to look at something and make it myself, but crocheted items are like my kryptonite. I can't just dissect it with my eyes and figure out how it was made like I can do with other things. I'm sure I could crochet if I gave it a try. I might get addicted to yarn and spend all of my time crocheting though! I don't have space for yarn and I don't have time to crochet!


MWL: What advice would you give other vendors?

Kristina: Advice...as a photographer, I look for items that won't break the bank AND are unique. So my suggestion is to make your items affordable (without compromising the cost of your time, of course) and different from items other vendors are offering. The prop market is heavily saturated, so you have to stand out from the crowd if you want to be successful.

Kristina has done so well selling extra props (she can usually make 2 upcycled sets out of one sweater, so she keeps one and sells the other) on Facebook that she has somewhat put the bow-making business on the back burner and has stopped listing her items on eBay and Etsy. Her business has grown from 129 likes to 715+ in just 6 months and she couldn't be happier that she's providing fun stuff for others to use in their photography projects AND keeps herself busy. She says, "between her props, bows, photography, ballet, Girl Scout Daisies, and both my daughter and I playing softball (and I coach her team), I also work at a flower shop." She did say she likes to keep busy right? Just call her Super Mom... or Wonder Woman. "Because I DO make people wonder... 'Is she a photographer? A crafter? A Psychologist? A floral designer?'" says Kristina. Among all of that, she does have more fun stuff in the works. New concepts and designs will be introduced into her shop soon, and we just can't wait to see what she comes up with next!

For the past few months these thoughts have been running through my mind, over and over again. Usually followed by, “Maybe I should call and cancel, wait until I’m thinner.” See I have always wanted to surprise my Husband with a boudoir shoot, nothing trashy, but pretty, tasteful and beautiful. One day I was talking to my friend Kristina (who is a photographer) we decide to go a head and schedule a shoot, it would be a first for both of us, Kristina mostly works with newborns.

As a mother of five beautiful children, lets just say I don’t look like I did in high school. Things have shifted, gotten bigger and sagged. Nothing is where it once was. Although my hubby tells me all the time that I am sexy, I still can’t help but look in the mirror and mourn the body I once had, oh to be a size 2 again. I drive an SUV, I wear Nikes and Yoga pants, there’s always some kind of unknown stain on my shirt. Can I really look “hot” again?

So I began to think, who or what makes us long for these little small bodies? Is it the media, models, men, or…. ourselves? I thought about this over and over, looking through hundreds of photos of other women. Boudoir shoot after boudoir shoot, asking my self “what is sexy?” And I realized something; all of these women (of all different body types) were sexy, not “in their own way” but just sexy, beautiful!!! I was not looking at these other women and thinking “oh she’s too fat” or “wow she really shouldn't be wearing that” which is what I imagined others would say about my photos. But rather that the stigma of the “perfect body” was a creation of my own imagination, that it was not at the fault of my husband that I no longer felt “sexy” but my own thoughts and actions, I had stopped trying to be sexy, stopped doing my make-up and hair, besides the basic mascara and a pony tail, I stopped wearing sexy outfits, I stopped trying. I had fallen into the mom trap.

The day of the shoot was getting closer and closer, and I was getting more and more nervous. Still questioning myself, and trying to talk my self out of it. I had asked a friend to go with me to help with my hair and make up and for moral support. I had started saving pictures to my phone of images I liked (it was a good thing my husband didn't look through my phone or he would have been very confused by all the pictures of other woman). Still thinking I can’t achieve this, these are professionals who know what angles to use to make these women beautiful, and as talented as Kristina is this is her first boudoir and I don’t know if we can pull this off. I bought some new “outfits” and got my hair and nails done, and even tried to diet but with little results. The few people who knew I was going to do this all had the same reaction “wow you are so brave, I would love to do that, but I’m to heavy, old, etc. maybe after I get into shape…yada yada yada” And I told all of them the same thing “That sexy was a state of mind, and we are all sexy” but truly wasn't believing it myself.

Before I knew it, it was time to go to the shoot. I had packed my bags and was as ready as I was ever going to be. Still thinking of these glamorous photos I had been researching and thinking, “I can never look like that.” Thinking this was going to be a huge waste of time, even the best Photoshop Pro would have their work cut out for them.

Hair done…Check

Make-Up…Check

Outfit…Check

Confidence…Um not so much.

Shortly after the shoot began I was starting to feel more and more comfortable. The three of us were laughing and having a blast. The shoot was not nearly as glamorous as I had imagined, and for that I was grateful. I was completely comfortable and at points was laughing so hard I was crying. There was absolutely no pressure and the time flew by. I quickly found that being “Sexy” was hard work and by the end of the shoot I was completely exhausted and my legs, back and abs ached. I felt like I had just spent hours at the gym. Who knew that taking some pictures would be so much work? As we packed up we were still laughing about things that were said during the shoot, “twerk” was the new word of the day, which no longer made us think of MTV and you know who, but was used to describe how I hurt my back holding a pose. “Twerking” is not for the weak. Maybe I am getting to old for this stuff??!!!!

Now that the shoot was behind me, I found myself more and more nervous, Kristina was going to send me the proofs to pick from and then she would edit the ones I picked out. I was so uneasy thinking about those photos, even though she had assured me that she liked what she had seen in the camera. When I reviewed the photos I was unsure of how I would react, I kept telling myself not to be too critical and that I had to at least pick 5 images to give to the Hubby. I clicked the link and up popped all of my photos. Wow there was A LOT!!! Good, hopefully I could find some I liked. As I scrolled though and wrote down the ones I liked I was over come with a feeling of surprise, elation, awe. The more I looked at the more I liked. Could this really be me? Could I really look like this…without Photoshop magic? I ended up liking over 20 photos.

I loved these pictures and couldn’t believe how they had turned out. No I didn’t look like a size 2 bombshell but I was pleased with the way they turned out. I looked pretty, soft, curvy, and real!!! I waited for the edited photos to see what Kristina would do to them. I expected that it would be weeks before I got them back and was surprised when she had them all done in just 2 days.

I was just as nervous and anxious to open the edited images as I was before. When I saw them I literally cried, I could not believe that was me in those pictures, how could it be, that’s not the same girl I see in the mirror every day. But it was! And I felt so good about myself, I felt pretty, glamorous, sexy and most of all beautiful. It had been a very long time since I had felt any of those things and in that moment, I decided that ALL women should feel this way!! That sexy really is a state of mind. I am living proof that you don’t need to be a size 3 with long blond hair to be hot, to look beautiful, it is all in the way we perceive ourselves. And with the correct lighting and angles any woman can look amazing. Don’t just do it for your significant other, but do it for yourself, (although they will be very excited to get them) every girl needs to feel pretty once and a while.

Find a photographer who is professional and that you feel comfortable with, pick out photos you like, but most of all relax and stop judging yourself, because no one else is, you are your worse critic and once you get past that everything else will fall into place.

Today we’re featuring the work of Kellie Conlon from Kellie Conlon Photography. I recently interviewed Kellie, she was kind enough to share a little inside information about her and her business! Take a look at what she had to say!

MWL: Tell us a little bit about yourself.

KC: I am a California native living in Tennessee! I have two daughters and a gorgeous hubby. I love being a mommy. My girls are so fun to be around and I love doing anything and everything with them. I love Christmas, coffee and anything sparkly!

MWL: What brought you to Tennessee?

KC: My husband and I wanted to start a family. We were living in downtown San Francisco and knew that wasn’t where we wanted to raise kids. My husband had been to Tennessee before and really liked it. We both love it here!

MWL: When did you start taking pictures?

KC: I started shooting football in high school. Then I took some Jr.College courses to really get serious about photography.

MWL: When did you start professionally?

KC: In 2003, I moved to San Francisco. I started working for some amazing wedding photographers as a second shooter. They taught me about business, weddings and all the technical stuff I needed to know about cameras. I started shooting my own weddings in 2004.

MWL: What do you shoot?

KC: I now specialize in newborns and maternity.

MWL: So you started with weddings and moved into newborns and maternity, why the change?

KC: Once I had my girls, I realized I just did not have the time it takes to do weddings. I still second shoot every once in a while. But once I did my first real newborn shoot, I was hooked.

MWL: What is your favorite to shoot and why?

KC: Newborns are my favorite. They amaze me. It is such a cliche, but it is so rewarding to give parents such precious images of their new baby.

MWL: Can you describe your style?

KC: Soft, whimsical, simple.

MWL: Tell us about your more interesting session.

KC: I have recently started styling my maternity shoots. I did one that was sort of a pin up look. The mama I photographed was absolutely perfect for the shoot! I had a hair/make up artist come and fancy her up. It was unbelievable!

MWL: What inspires you?

KC: It is ironic, but light inspires me. I love the “Golden Hour”. Little pockets of light in a scene are like magic.

MWL: Do you have a role model you look up to?

KC: I did some mentoring with Jennie Pyffereon. She’s amazing. Her posing and setups are impeccable. She is so nice too!

MWL: If you could give any advice to fellow photographers, vendors, or parents, what would it be?

KC: Be nice, and generous! I have learned so much from the photographers I’ve worked for. They have been kind and giving in their knowledge.

Kellie was great to interview, she’s such a kind person! She says she’s in the process of building a studio in her backyard – we can’t wait to see it when it’s done along with the beautiful images that will come from it! Thanks Kellie!

Photographer Spotlight: Frozen Orchard Photography

Recently, we had the chance to sit down and chat with Nataliya from Frozen Orchard Photography. She was kind enough to share with us some of her work and some helpful advice. Read on to see what she had to say

MWL: Tell us a little bit about you.

FOP: I’m from Ukraine. My family moved to Wasilla AK, in March of 2002 when I was 10. I happen to be oldest child of family of 11 kids. Met my husband Eric in a college library (I know, classic) after a month of hanging out we got married in March. This year we welcomed our baby girl Bella, again in March. In simple words March is my favorite month.

MWL: When did you start taking pictures?

FOP: I always loved photography but somehow managed to let family and friends convince me it wasn’t “my thing”. When I was home schooled I couldn’t decide what electives to take. My teacher asked me what I loved doing and I admitted it was still photography. He encouraged me to try online class, which I gladly did after finding out I was getting a free new camera to go with it. Of course I couldn’t sit long enough to pass the class but I did learn a lot from reading the lesson plans. That was my first hands on experimenting with taking pictures. After a while I decided to dress up my little sister and she became my little model until she bathed my camera in the toilet. My happy photographing days came to a halt and stayed that way for another 5 years.

MWL: When did you start professionally?

FOP: I can’t really say when I started because we had the camera forever. I bought it as an early birthday gift for my husband who loves photography as much as I do (if not more). He’s also the “creator” of Frozen Orchard and photographer. Our “official” first photo shoot was this February I believe. It’s hard to remember with the excitement of expecting our first child, but we did come a long way since then. I mostly learned from hands on experimenting. Eric on other hand has taken classes and knows more about the technical side of photography.

MWL: What do you shoot?

FOP: I love taking pictures no matter who or what the subject is. I find it a lot easier to pose people and objects than to do landscape or nature photography. I have done maternity, newborn, family/portraits, and weddings/events. I also have a slight obsession with props.

MWL: What is your favorite to shoot and why?

FOP: People! I love capturing the priceless expression of a child or taking a photo of someone and they look at it and say “Wow, I didn’t know I could look that good”. I love the way a bride and groom look at each other during their wedding ceremony, or a sleepy face of little newborn baby. Random facial expressions are my all-time favorite!

MWL: Can you describe your style?

FOP: My style changes all the time. Some of my photos look dreamy and almost old/vintage while others are crisp and clear. It all depends on who I’m taking photos of.

MWL: Tell us about your more interesting session.

FOP: My most memorable and interesting photo session was probably my very first one. It was a maternity shoot and I’ve never taken pictures of anyone outside family before. I expected it to be nerve wrecking and awkward but it ended up great. I still love the photos and can’t wait to do it again

MWL: What inspires you?

FOP: My biggest inspiration is my husband, who pushed me on even when I was ready to give up and taught me most of what I know today. He never gave up and it rubbed off on me, which I am forever grateful for.

MWL: Do you have a role model you look up to?

FOP: My favorite photographer isOxana Brik. I thought I had to develop a specific style and stick to it until I saw some of her work. Her imagination has no end. She also won a few first places in Russia and a best photographer of the year award (also in Russia). I love her work.


MWL: If you could give any advice to fellow photographers, vendors, or parents, what would it be?

FOP: I think photographers and vendors should try to have fun as much as possible. It’s hard to create something special when you don’t enjoy doing it. And sometimes inspirations come from the simplest things in life. For parents I’d say never miss an opportunity to record your child’s special moments. I personally don’t have any pictures of myself as a baby and sometimes it feels like a tiny part of me is missing. I can’t even tell if my baby looks anything like me as a baby.

Photographer Spotlight: Raquel Loren’ Photography

For our very first Photographer Spotlight, we had the opportunity to talk with Raquel from Raquel Loren’ Photography. She comes to us from Canton, Georgia to reveal a little bit about herself and her passion for photography. Read on to learn more about this beautiful young lady and her amazing talents!

MWL: Tell us a little bit about you:


RL: I am a wife. I am a mother to a beautiful little girl. I am also doing what I love as a full time photographer. I have a great sense of humor and I always try to look on the bright side of everything, I am a creative soul and I love art and music. Photography for me is a way to express how I see people and how I see the world. Being able to capture the true essence of a persons personality, or the true smile and happiness of a child exploring their world…it is the most beautiful thing about being a photographer. For me it isn’t about the money or being “famous” – its about giving someone a chance to see themselves as beautiful and inspiring and giving them those precious memories to have forever.


MWL: When did you start taking pictures?


RL: I started three years ago when I was 16. I had always loved photography and one day I took my Nikon point and shoot and just started taking pictures…I haven’t stopped since!

MWL: When did you start professionally?


RL: About two years ago I got myself a professional camera and went local with my work, I have grown so much since I first started and I look forward to taking my skills to higher places.


MWL: What do you shoot?


RL: I shoot EVERYTHING! I mainly do children, lifestyle and fashion photography – I am now starting to venture in to doing newborns.


MWL: What is your favorite to shoot and why?


RL: I would have to say children. Children give you a challenge, they make you move, they make you run around, bend in odd positions and they definitely push your patience and skills to the next level. They also make you smile, laugh and make dig into your inner child to see what they see.


MWL: Can you describe your style?


RL: Natural. I love natural light, I love using light, airy and vintage edits. I love natural, candid poses.


MWL: Tell us about your more interesting session.

RL: Hmm…this one is difficult, due to something interesting ALWAYS seem to happen during a session. I would have to say capturing my best friend have a baby…just seeing and photographing a life enter this world is just unexplainable. I believe everyone in the room cried, especially after having to wait 24 hours in a hospital room and having to sleep on the floor with nothing but a pillow and my camera


MWL: What inspires you?


RL: Love. Love inspires me. Seeing the love between a couple and seeing the love between a mother and child. The quote, “All you Need is Love” doesn’t just mean romantically, it means loving life and the people in your life.

MWL: Do you have a role model you look up to?


RL: Gosh, I could name a TON of photographers that I look up to and inspire to be like. To name a few: Lara Jade and Emily Soto – both fashion photographers and I would have to say, Lindsey Mills for children and newborns.


MWL: If you could give any advice to fellow photographers, vendors, or parents, what would it be?


RL: Fellow Photographers: Follow your dreams and your hearts! Don’t ever let anyone put you down about your work or tell you that you aren’t good enough. You will grow and learn. You will make mistakes, but you will always go UP as along as you follow your dreams. Vendors: Keep up the good work you creative geniuses!
